Kolkata, Oct. 7 -- An RTI response from the State Crime Records Bureau, accessed by former MAITC Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale, has purportedly recorded 2,454 rape cases in West Bengal between May and September 24, according to figures shared by the Mamata Trinamool.
The data also listed 600 murders, 13,114 attempted murders and 32,341 cases of assault causing grievous hurt during the period.
MAITC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee shared the figures on Wednesday, calling them "a snapshot of the BJP's 'Double Engine' disaster in West Bengal."
The figures work out to an average of around 16 rape cases, four murder cases, 87 attempt-to-murder cases and 216 cases of grievous assault every day during the five months.
The monthly breakup showed 349 rape cases in May, 389 in June, 786 in July, 459 in August and 471 till September 24. Murder cases stood at 125 in May, 134 in June, 133 in July, 111 in August and 97 till September 24. Attempt-to-murder cases stood at 2,947 in May, 3,096 in June, 2,562 in July, 2,498 in August and 2,011 till September 24. Cases of assault causing grievous hurt stood at 7,794, 6,922, 6,191, 6,334 and 5,100 respectively.
The Mamata Trinamool, while sharing the data on X, accused the BJP government of failing to ensure law and order and questioned its "safe and secure Bengal" promise. Referring to the BJP's "Bhorsha In, Bhoy Out" slogan, the party alleged that the figures presented a different picture and demanded security, accountability and justice.
Outside the Assembly, MAITC MLA Kunal Ghosh called the data "explosive" and sought an urgent Assembly discussion and statements from the government and Governor. He also alleged that some complaints were not properly registered and cases diluted. ISF MLA Nawsad Siddiqui also cited the RTI figures, saying the situation was "frightening" and that the government must explain what steps
it was taking.
