New Delhi, Nov. 2 -- The Delhi government has approved an expenditure of Rs 387.84 crore to replace and upgrade the drainage network along the Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road, targeting persistent waterlogging in several parts of southeast Delhi. The project will cover a 22-km stretch between Lado Sarai and the Pul Prahladpur railway overbridge and is expected to be completed within two years of the award of work.
According to Public Works Department (PWD) officials, the existing drainage infrastructure along the corridor has struggled to cope with the volume of rainwater flowing in from the Sangam Vihar belt. Construction activities in the area have further affected natural drainage channels, aggravating water accumulation during the monsoon.
Under the proposed project, old brick drains will be replaced with precast reinforced cement concrete (RCC) box drains. Officials said the new structures will be designed to improve stormwater carrying capacity and reduce the need for frequent repairs and maintenance.
The stretch has witnessed recurring drainage-related problems over the years. Even the road between Shooting Range and MB Road, which was reconstructed before this year's monsoon, suffered damage after rainwater remained accumulated on its surface.
The project forms part of the Delhi government's larger drainage master plan, estimated to cost around Rs 57,000 crore.
