Kolkata, Aug. 27 -- The Supreme Court has sought the Central Bureau of Investigation's response to a bail plea filed by former R G Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh in a case concerning alleged financial irregularities at the state-run hospital.
A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale directed the CBI to respond by October 15.
Ghosh is accused of financial misconduct linked to the administration of R G Kar, including alleged irregularities in tender processes and the handling of hospital resources. The allegations came to the fore through a complaint by former deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali, who had approached the Calcutta High Court alleging mismanagement of dead bodies, diversion of public funds and illegal disposal and resale of biomedical waste.
The High Court had subsequently handed the probe into the alleged irregularities to the CBI. Ghosh had challenged the transfer before the Supreme Court, but the court declined to intervene.
The proceedings against Ghosh are separate from the investigation into the August 9, 2024 rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar. Following the incident and widespread protests, the High Court transferred the murder investigation to the CBI.Ghosh was arrested by the central agency in connection with the financial irregularities case and continues to remain in custody in that matter.
He has, however, secured bail in the alleged cover-up case after the CBI failed to submit its chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period.
The CBI had told the High Court last year that the state government had granted sanction to prosecute Ghosh.
