NEW DELHI, May 11 -- The Delhi Police have busted a gang of fake police officers accused of duping a Rajasthan-based man by impersonating law enforcement personnel in northwest Delhi. The accused were identified as Vinay alias Monty (20) and Kuldeep (30), both residents of Sonipat in Haryana. Three accused, including a juvenile, were apprehended from Haryana, police said.
According to police, cash worth Rs 33.5 lakh, two expensive mobile phones allegedly purchased using the cheated money, the bag used in the crime, and the motorcycle used during the offence were recovered from the accused.
The matter came to light after a complaint was lodged at Mangolpuri Police Station on May 9.
The complainant, Savaram, a resident of Rajasthan's Sirohi district, told police that he and his friend had arrived in Pitampura carrying cash on behalf of his employer. As they got down from an autorickshaw near the Vardhman Plaza bus stand and walked towards Tarun Enclave, two men intercepted them while posing as police personnel.
The accused allegedly questioned the complainant, seized the bag containing cash, and asked him to wait, claiming that senior officers were on their way.
The duo then fled the spot on a Splendor motorcycle.
Initially, the complainant told police that the bag contained Rs 9 lakh. However, during sustained questioning, he disclosed that the actual amount was Rs 50 lakh, stating that fear had prevented him from revealing the full amount earlier.
Following the complaint, police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and launched an investigation.
Using CCTV footage, technical surveillance and informer inputs, police apprehended Vinay, Kuldeep and a juvenile from Haryana's Gohana on May 10. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused and recover the remaining cheated amount.
