Alipurduar, Oct. 4 -- A new police outpost was inaugurated at Rajabhatkhawa on Sunday to strengthen security for tourists visiting Rajabhatkhawa, Jayanti and other destinations adjoining the Buxa forests.
The outpost has been set up in a wooden Forest department building beside the Rajabhatkhawa football ground, which has been handed over to the police.
Rajabhatkhawa is one of Alipurduar district's major tourist destinations and after the recent release of a Royal Bengal tiger into Buxa, the importance of the area has increased further.
The outpost was inaugurated by Minister of State for Home Affairs Bishal Lama and North Bengal IGP Sukesh Kumar Jain.
The Alipurduar District Magistrate, senior police and Forest Department officials were also present.
Bishal Lama said the growing importance of Buxa had created the need for stronger security arrangements in the area.
"There was a need for a police outpost here, and this facility has been established recognising that importance," he said.
Welcoming the move, residents said people from several forest villages and remote settlements in the area previously had to travel to Kalchini
Police Station for police-related matters.
