New Delhi, Sept. 5 -- The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has forecast a fresh spell of intensified rainfall across south Bengal from Monday to Wednesday, with heavy rain likely in several districts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
A yellow alert has been issued for the coastal and western districts, with South 24-Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan and Birbhum expected to receive heavy showers on Wednesday.
The MeT office has warned that rainfall could intensify further on Thursday. In north Bengal, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar may receive heavy rain over the next 48 hours, though conditions are expected to improve from Wednesday.
Several parts of south Bengal and adjoining areas received spells of rain on Saturday, while light to moderate showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue on Sunday.
The weather is being influenced by an active low-pressure system and the southwest monsoon trough extending from Rajasthan to Manipur through north Bengal. Kolkata, which had witnessed waterlogging following days of rain, enjoyed a brief respite on Friday, allowing several inundated areas to drain.
