Kolkata, Sept. 18 -- Vishwakarma Puja may have marked the beginning of the countdown to Durga Puja, but the weather in Bengal is showing little sign of the approaching festive season. Instead of the clear autumn sky dotted with fluffy white clouds, dark clouds continue to dominate the skies, followed by thunder and sudden spells of rain across several parts of the state.
The Weather Office has said that the unsettled weather is likely to continue for a few more days. While the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon has begun in parts of western India, there is no immediate indication of its retreat from eastern India. A fresh low-pressure area is also likely to form over the sea. Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal are expected to receive scattered rain over the weekend. The city witnessed waterlogging in several areas following Friday's rain. The weather office recorded 32 mm of rain on Friday. Parts of Kaikhali near Kolkata airport were inundated, with knee-deep water disrupting traffic. Salt Lake and New Town also witnessed heavy spells of rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
In North Bengal, heavy rain is likely in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on Friday, while Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Malda and the two Dinajpur districts may receive scattered thunderstorms and rain. No major weather warning has been issued for North Bengal from Saturday.
