Kolkata, Sept. 25 -- Despite weakening after moving inland, the depression continued to trigger spells of rain and gusty winds across South Bengal, including Kolkata, on Friday, disrupting normal life in several areas. Coastal regions also witnessed rough weather, with high waves reported at Bakkhali and Digha.
In Kolkata, a tree fell on a car near Exide More amid the inclement weather. No one was inside the vehicle at the time, but the incident blocked the road for nearly an hour, disrupting traffic in the area. At Falta, a tree fell on the national highway, affecting vehicular movement.
The weather office said the depression was located over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha. The system has weakened from a deep depression into a depression and is expected to move north-northwestwards during the next 12 hours before weakening further into a well-marked low-pressure area. The weather office has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in six coastal districts. An orange alert has also been issued for gusty winds in South 24-Parganas and the two Midnapore districts. Heavy rain is also likely in Birbhum, West Burdwan, Bankura and Purulia.
However, the weather is expected to improve from Saturday. All districts of South Bengal may receive light to moderate rain on Saturday, but no district has been placed under a heavy-rain alert.
