Raiganj, Aug. 5 -- After a gap of nearly three months, the Raiganj Municipality in North Dinajpur district is set to revive its domestic drinking water supply project, bringing much-needed relief to around 20,000 households across all 27 municipal wards. Municipal authorities said the supply is expected to resume next week after the pipelines are cleaned and flushed.
As part of the restoration process, the municipality will begin cleaning the suspended water pipelines from August 6. Residents have been requested to keep the bib cocks of their household connections open until further notice to facilitate the flushing of the pipelines before potable water is supplied.
The domestic water supply project was reportedly suspended by the previous administrative board following the change in power in the state. The supply was stopped without any official explanation, forcing thousands of residents to depend on alternative sources of drinking water during the past three months.
Ranendra Madhab Goswami, a resident of Ward No. 5, said he had received a municipal water connection about four months ago and was getting regular drinking water before the supply was suddenly stopped after the 2026 Assembly election results.
Goswami said: "The sudden suspension created immense hardship for our family. We are happy that the new administration has decided to restore the service."
Tanmay Banerjeee, the newly appointed Administrator of Raiganj Municipality, who is also the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Raiganj, said: "The pipelines will be thoroughly flushed and cleaned before the supply resumes to ensure safe drinking water.
From next week, nearly 20,000 households in all 27 wards will once again receive municipal drinking water.
Intensive miking arrangements are being made, urging residents not to drink water until further announcement."
