Raiganj, Oct. 11 -- The Raiganj municipality in North Dinajpur district has launched a drive to reconstruct damaged roads across all 27 wards with an allocation of Rs 16.5 crore from the state Urban Development department ahead of Durga Puja. Raiganj MLA Kaushik Chowdhury on Sunday inaugurated a newly reconstructed road in one of the municipal wards, marking progress in road connectivity.

Chowdhury said the condition of the roads had been brought to the notice of the state Urban Development department, following which Rs 16.5 crore was sanctioned for reconstruction work. "Reconstruction of important roads in all 27 wards has started on a war footing. Some roads are being constructed using mastic technology. We expect residents across all wards to benefit from improved road connectivity before Durga Puja."

For more than four years, the municipality has been functioning under an administrative arrangement in the absence of an elected board. Following the change of power in the state, the Raiganj Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Tanmay Banerjee was appointed administrator of the municipality.

Several roads across the municipal area had remained in a dilapidated condition for years due to inadequate maintenance, causing inconvenience to residents. With Durga Puja approaching, the poor condition of the roads had become a major concern for local people.
