Kolkata, Oct. 6 -- Rabindra Sangeet exponent Biva Sengupta, a nonagenarian known for her distinctive singing style and decades-long musical journey, passed away on Tuesday due to age-related ailments. She was 94. Sengupta was admitted to a city hospital for some time and breathed her last around 7 am on Tuesday. The body of the late singer was brought to Rabindra Sadan where her students and admirers paid tribute through songs.

Born in Agartala on May 12, 1932, Sengupta moved to Kolkata in 1959. Around this time, she began training in Rabindra Sangeet under Maya Sen. It was later through Maya Sen that she was introduced to legendary Rabindra Sangeet exponent Debabrata Biswas. Sengupta remained devoted to her guru and observed his birth anniversary every year with great dedication.

Although she performed on radio and TV programmes throughout her life, Sengupta remained more focused on teaching music. She also ran her own institution, 'Amitayan', where she imparted music lessons. Perhaps that was why she was never particularly concerned about fame or recognition. For her, music remained the centre of her life.

Sengupta was suffering from age-related ailments for a long time. However, illness never came in the way of her musical practice.
