India, July 24 -- Authorities investigating the violence suspect there may be a wider conspiracy behind the unrest, with misleading information circulated through social media, including accounts believed to be operated from Pakistan, playing a role in fuelling tensions. Police said they had identified several Pakistan-based social media accounts that were allegedly spreading fake news and inflammatory content about the violence. So far, more than 400 such accounts have been flagged for circulating misinformation and provoking unrest. Investigators are also examining who incited the violence on the ground and said strict action would be taken against those involved in rioting and other unlawful activities. Authorities added that a drive to cancel the passports of those accused of involvement in violence, rioting and other illegal acts would be launched. The investigation is continuing, with officials analysing the digital trail and other evidence. They urged the public not to share unverified information or rumours on social media and to rely only on official sources for updates on the violence and the situation.
