Alipurduar, Aug. 4 -- During a surprise inspection at Alipurduar District Hospital on Tuesday, Alipurduar MLA Paritosh Das alleged that birth certificates had been issued illegally from the hospital's Birth and Death Certificate Section. Following the allegations, police seized relevant logbooks and official records, triggering tension in the hospital.

Das said: "A few days ago I received a document that raised suspicion over the issuance of a birth certificate. During my inspection, I sought access to the relevant records and online database, and officials initially attempted to mislead me. After the original 1999 register was produced, I found overwritten entries, differences in handwriting and signs of tampering."

The MLA immediately informed the Officer-in-Charge of Alipurduar Police Station, while Hospital Superintendent Paritosh Mondal remained present during the inspection.

Das alleged that a birth certificate had been issued in violation of legal procedures and claimed that several similar certificates might have been issued over the past few months in exchange for money.

He demanded a comprehensive investigation and said he would file a written complaint with the police.

Following the inspection, police seized the relevant records as part of the investigation. Hospital authorities had not issued an official statement on the allegations till the filing of this report.
