Kolkata, Aug. 17 -- West Bengal Police on Monday night came up with a statement regarding the death of Sheikh Md. Mafik who was allegedly assaulted because of his son Sheikh Abdul Hafiz had joined the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) movement in Delhi.

In a social media post, police claimed that Mafik had sustained an injury for which one single stitch was required on August 13. But on August 15, Mafik got 'self-admitted' to Burdwan Medical College after experiencing severe blood pressure fluctuations. Police also claimed that the treating doctor did not find any life-threatening injury on Mafik.

Authorities alleged that following his death, baseless and false claims began circulating online alleging that Mafik had died from a 'brutal physical assault'.

Police said that eight individuals have been arrested so far while a massive manhunt is on to nab the remaining two suspects.

The authorities have also urged people to refrain from spreading misleading information and allow the investigation to proceed.
