Raiganj, Sept. 10 -- Police on Thursday recovered a 7 mm pistol and nine rounds of live ammunition allegedly used in the murder of school headmaster Najrul Islam from beneath a bush at Amlajhari village under Islampur Police Station in North Dinajpur district.
Najrul Islam (57), headmaster of Ramganj Rajbhim FP School and former president of the Trinamool Congress Primary Education Cell in Islampur block, was shot dead on August 8 while he was travelling to school on his motorcycle. According to police, two unidentified miscreants intercepted him at Madaripur and opened fire. He sustained a bullet injury to his abdomen and died while being taken to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. The recovery of the firearm came during the ongoing investigation into the murder.
Police had earlier arrested Minnata Khatun, a teacher at a local Sishu Sikkha Kendra (SSK), from her residence at Vivekananda Para in Islampur on August 29. Investigators allegedly identified her as the mastermind behind the killing.
Police subsequently arrested another accused, Mahammad Musaraf alias Lala, a resident of Islampur, from Delhi. Two more accused, Mahammad Sahil and Anjamul Alam, were later arrested from Kajivasti in Thakurganj, Bihar, and Vita in Sangli district of Maharashtra, respectively.
After producing the accused before the court, police took them into custody for interrogation as part of the investigation. On Thursday morning, a police team went to Amlajhari village accompanied by three of the accused. During the search, the accused allegedly led investigators to a spot beneath a bush where the firearm and ammunition had been concealed.
Rakesh Singh, Superintendent of Police of Islampur Police District, said: "The recovered 7 mm pistol and nine rounds had been sent for forensic examination. The investigation is still going on."
