New Delhi, July 9 -- Delhi Police have arrested three people, including a former Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) employee of the Income Tax Department, for allegedly running a fake government recruitment racket that promised jobs in the department and cheated several job seekers.

The accused have been identified as Rohit Chauhan alias Deepak Tiwari (37), a resident of Kamal Vihar, Karawal Nagar; Chirag Aggarwal alias Naveen Prakash (41), a former MTS employee of the Income Tax Department and a resident of Patel Vihar, Karawal Nagar; and Tarun Goswami alias Giriraj (37), a resident of Khajuri Khas. According to police, the gang is suspected to have duped six to seven victims of nearly Rs 10 lakh. One complainant alone allegedly lost Rs 2.03 lakh after being promised an MTS post in the Income Tax Department.

The case came to light following a complaint lodged at Hauz Qazi police station on May 18. The complainant alleged that the accused posed as Income Tax Department officials and assured him of securing a government job. Between December 22 and 31, 2025, he initially paid Rs 5,000 in cash before transferring Rs 1.98 lakh-his entire provident fund savings-through digital transactions.

Police said the accused used fake Income Tax verification forms to make the recruitment process appear genuine. They allegedly called candidates for fake interviews and orientation sessions inside the Income Tax Department premises at Civic Centre to lend credibility to the fraud. Victims were also told that official identity cards were being processed, but no appointment letters or payment receipts were ever issued.

An FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following which a special team launched an investigation. Through technical surveillance and analysis of bank transactions and mobile phone records, police arrested Rohit Chauhan from Rohini on July 3. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Chirag Aggarwal and Tarun Goswami.

Police recovered four phones, forged verification forms and victims' documents. Investigators are searching for the mastermind and probing possible involvement of serving officials.
