New Delhi, Sept. 12 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a photograph with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday, bringing together the leaders of three of the grouping's most prominent member countries.
The photograph comes as the 18th BRICS Summit gets underway in the national capital, with leaders discussing global conflicts, economic cooperation, trade and the future of multilateral institutions.
The meeting of Modi, Xi and Putin is particularly significant as India and China have been working to improve bilateral ties after years of tensions following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Xi's visit to India is his first in seven years, while Modi and Putin have continued frequent high-level engagement.
Modi had already held a bilateral meeting with Putin on Friday, where the two leaders reviewed cooperation in areas including defence, energy, trade, space and technology. Putin also invited Modi to Russia for the next India-Russia annual summit, an invitation that the Prime Minister accepted.
Modi and Xi are also expected to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. Their discussions are being closely watched amid efforts to stabilise India-China relations and address outstanding differences.
The photograph of the three leaders highlights the importance of India, China and Russia within BRICS as the expanded grouping seeks greater cooperation on economic and geopolitical issues while navigating differences among its members.
