
Gurugram, Sept. 8 -- A two-year-old girl was killed after being run over by a speeding car while playing with her elder sister outside her home in Gurugram's Sector 6 on Monday night.
The police were alerted about the incident through a PCR call received at the sector 5 Police Station.
The accused driver, a 30-year-old private firm employee and local resident was arrested on Tuesday and the vehicle involved in the accident was seized.
The victim, identified as a minor playing outside her house with her elder sister Dhvija at around 9 pm when the incident occurred.
According to police, the entire accident was captured by CCTV cameras installed in the neighbourhood.
The footage showed the two sisters playing outside their house while their mother stood a few steps away, speaking to someone.
At around 9:02 pm, a car approached the corner house and took a sharp right turn. During the manoeuvre, the vehicle ran over Adrija, while her elder sister managed to move away and escape being hit.
Adrija's mother immediately picked up the toddler and found her unresponsive. The family rushed her to a private hospital in Palam Vihar, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The girl's father, Virendra Tiwari, said the driver also got out of the car and tried to help after the incident.
Tiwari, an engineer with a US based travel technology company, alleged that the driver was aware that children were present in the area.
According to Tiwari, the driver had passed the same spot around five minutes earlier. He said his wife had managed to pull both daughters away from the road at that time, but the driver allegedly
returned at high speed and hit Adrija while taking
the turn.
Tiwari said he immediately informed the police control room following the accident. He also alleged that police personnel who arrived at the spot initially tried to convince the family that the incident was unintentional.
Police said the family originally belonged to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh and had been residing in Gurugram for several years.
Sandeep Turan, public relations officer of Gurugram Police, said an FIR was registered at Sector 5 police station under Sections 106 and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertaining to causing death by negligence and rash driving.
The accused told police that he could not see the children because it was dark, leading to the accident. Further investigation is underway.
