New Delhi, Aug. 29 -- The recovery of three mobile phones, including an iPhone, two Wi-Fi routers, storage devices and Rs 31,000 in cash from the cell of life-term prisoner Aftab Ansari at Presidency Correctional Home has triggered a probe into how the prohibited items entered the jail.
The seizure was made during a special search on August 23, following which jail authorities lodged a complaint with Hastings police. The seized items include three smartphones, two routers, a Wi-Fi device, two card readers, a pen drive, an OTG cable, an adapter and wireless earbuds.
Investigators are examining whether Ansari used the phones and internet connection to communicate with people outside the prison through WhatsApp or Telegram, including possible contacts abroad. They are also probing the source of the cash and whether prison staff helped him obtain
the devices.
Ansari is serving a life sentence for his role in the 2002 American Centre attack in Kolkata and had previously been accused of communicating with his wife in Karachi from jail. The seizure comes amid a wider probe into mobile phone use inside Presidency Correctional Home.
