Raiganj, May 14 -- The Block Development Officer (BDO) of Hemtabad block in North Dinajpur district has started an inquiry against Bangalbari Gram Panchayat over alleged misappropriation of panchayat funds related to the lease of several large ponds and shops in local markets.

According to sources, the BDO recently visited the area, inspected records and verified accounts maintained by the gram panchayat authorities. During the preliminary investigation, irregularities were allegedly found in the collection and deposit of lease and rental money. It was reported that 18 large ponds were leased out in the name of pisciculture without following proper tender procedures. Locals alleged that the lease amounts fixed for the ponds were unusually low.

Similar allegations were also raised regarding the rental rates of several stalls in the gram panchayat markets, which were reportedly allotted at very low rates. Some local residents brought the matter to the notice of the administration, suspecting misappropriation of funds, following which the inquiry was initiated. Biswajit Dutta, BDO of Hemtabad, said: "On the basis of complaints, we started an inquiry. During the ongoing investigation, we found that rent collected from shops was not properly deposited in the panchayat fund.

The lease process of 18 ponds has been suspended. If any misappropriation is detected, lawful action will be taken against those responsible."
