New Delhi, Oct. 5 -- The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) staged a symbolic "living dead" protest at Jantar Mantar on Monday, alleging that voters' rights and the democratic process were being undermined through what it termed "Vote Chori".
The protest was led by NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar, with demonstrators portraying themselves as "living dead" to highlight their concerns over the electoral process. The protesters demanded the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Several NSUI members, including Jakhar, were detained by the Delhi Police during the demonstration. The student organisation condemned the detentions, maintaining that its members were protesting peacefully and seeking accountability from the Election Commission.
Jakhar said the protest was intended to convey that the alleged denial of voters' rights undermined the meaning of democracy. He also accused the government of using police action instead of addressing questions raised over the electoral process.
NSUI media in-charge Ravi Hanuman Pandey condemned the detention of the organisation's national president and other members, saying that students raising questions about the electoral process should not be silenced.
The organisation said it would continue its campaign against what it described as "Vote Chori" and seek greater accountability.
