Raiganj, Oct. 1 -- The cops of Itahar Police Station in North Dinajpur district arrested two persons from Amdanga in North 24-Parganas district in connection with an alleged extortion case, in which a businessman was reportedly forced to pay money by individuals posing as police officers.

The arrested persons were identified as Mainul Hassan and Sayan Haque, both residents of Amdanga Police Station area in North 24-Parganas. Police recovered Rs 1,02,500 from their possession, which investigators suspect is part of the money allegedly extorted from the businessman.

According to police, around a fortnight ago, a group of miscreants allegedly demanded and collected Rs 2 lakh from businessman Amit Kundu at Durgapur by claiming to be associated with officials of Itahar Police Station.Following a complaint, police launched probe and arrested three persons in connection with the case. They were subsequently produced before a court.

During investigation, police traced the involvement of Mainul Hassan and Sayan Haque and conducted a raid at Amdanga on Wednesday night. Both were arrested and brought to Itahar.

Gautam Chowdhury, Inspector in-charge of Itahar Police Station, said, "Two persons were arrested in connection with the extortion case and were produced before the court on Thursday with a prayer for police custody."
