Siliguri, May 15 -- Stressing the importance of infrastructure and sustainable development, Raju Bista, the MP of Darjeeling assured all possible support for the growth of the real estate sector and infrastructure development across the Darjeeling hills, Siliguri, Terai, Dooars and the entire North Bengal region while addressing the "North Bengal Realty Reimagined 2026" conference organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Renowned industrialists from North Bengal participated in the event, which was held at a private hotel in Siliguri on Friday.
Speaking at the event, Bista said, "North Bengal, often described as the gateway to Northeast India, is on the verge of significant expansion with major infrastructure projects already underway. Such as the expansion of Bagdogra Airport, development of new national highways and expressways, elevated corridors, and major railway projects including the Sevoke-Rangpo rail line."
He further added, "We will develop all the necessary infrastructure for the development of our region."
He also spoke on the role of the real estate sector in India's economy, stating that it currently contributes around 7.3 per cent to the country's GDP and is expected to rise to 15 per cent by 2047, potentially becoming a $5-6 trillion industry. He noted that the sector directly employs more than 5.5 crore people and supports over 250 allied industries.
Referring to reforms introduced since 2014, Bista said measures such as RERA and digitisation of land records have improved transparency and simplified land transactions.
He further emphasised the need for growth and advocated for energy-efficient and net-zero aligned construction practices using local materials like bamboo, jute and stone to reduce carbon emissions and support India's 2070 net-zero target.
Bista also made political remarks said, "West Bengal had entered a new phase of development after decades under previous governments. I would like to call upon industry stakeholders to collaborate with the double engine government to accelerate growth across the state and North Bengal."
Harsh Berlia, on behalf of the ICC North Bengal Chapter said, "We are hopeful that the new government will take necessary steps to develop our industry in the entire North Bengal."
