New Delhi, Sept. 2 -- The constitution of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) special committees for 2026-27 has brought a new set of councillors to the helm of portfolios ranging from public health and works to environment, gardens and law, at a time when the civic body faces a host of pressing issues.
The chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of the committees were elected unopposed on September 2. The new panel includes experienced councillors, women members and younger representatives, with the civic body describing the composition as a balance of experience and fresh perspectives.
Among the key appointments, Mukesh Kumar Goel and Reena Maheshwari will head the Appointments, Promotions, Disciplinary and Allied Matters Committee as chairman and vice-chairperson, respectively. Preeti and Dharambir Sharma will lead the Works Committee, while Vikesh Sethi and Ramesh Kumar Garg will head the Medical Relief and Public Health Committee.
Sandeep Kapoor and Anita have been appointed to the Environment Management Services Committee, while Narender Kumar Singh and Veena Asija will lead the Garden Committee. Priyanka Gautam and Monika Goyal will head the Law and General Purposes Committee.
Other committees include the Code of Conduct for Councillors, Hindi Committee, Sports Promotion and Allied Matters Committee and Assurance Committee.
Public health, sanitation on agenda
The new committees take charge amid several issues raised during the Standing Committee meeting. Councillors flagged mosquito-borne diseases, swine flu, illegal play schools, encroachments, stray animals, park maintenance, pollution and sanitation.
Standing Committee chairperson Satya Sharma directed officials to intensify fogging in vulnerable areas and undertake awareness campaigns against dengue and malaria. She also called for wider public awareness on preventive measures against swine flu.
Illegal play schools also came under scrutiny, with officials asked to identify such institutions and ensure compliance with safety norms for children.
Councillors also raised concerns over illegal food carts and open tandoors operating on roads and public spaces, citing traffic obstruction and pollution. Officials were directed to conduct regular inspections and take action against violations.
Stray cattle another challenge
The issue of stray and abandoned cattle was discussed, with Sharma proposing that the Delhi Government provide land for new gaushalas. Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the committees would accelerate development and improve civic services.
