New Delhi, Sept. 20 -- The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Sunday organised a plantation drive at Palika Awas in Sarojini Nagar as part of its 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, marking the 42nd consecutive Sunday of the initiative.
NDMC Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal, along with local residents, RWA representatives and civic officials, participated in the drive. Residents planted saplings in honour of their mothers and pledged to nurture them.
Chahal said the campaign's continuation for 42 Sundays reflected growing public participation and a sense of responsibility towards the environment. He stressed that planting a sapling was only the first step and that its regular watering, nourishment and protection were equally important.
"Plant a sapling, protect it and nurture it into a tree" should remain the core message of the campaign, he said.
During the programme, residents and RWA representatives also raised civic issues, including seepage, road repairs, water supply, sanitation and cleaning of green areas. Chahal directed the concerned officials to inspect the sites and ensure that the issues were resolved within the stipulated timelines.
He said direct interaction with residents helped the civic body understand ground-level problems and address them in a timely manner.
The campaign, he said, was evolving beyond a plantation programme by encouraging citizens to take responsibility for the upkeep of saplings in their neighbourhoods.
