New Delhi, June 9 -- The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) reviewed the progress of an ongoing redevelopment project at Khan Market, with Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal inspecting the site and directing officials to expedite works while ensuring minimum inconvenience to visitors and traders.

The project, estimated at Rs.1.21 crore, involves the redevelopment of the market's middle lane through the installation of an integrated drainage system and the upgradation of pavements and flooring. According to NDMC officials, the existing interlocking pavers had deteriorated over time and required frequent repairs due to heavy pedestrian movement and commercial activity.

The redevelopment plan includes new drainage lines, sewer and water supply infrastructure, electrical utility ducts, granite stone flooring, interlocking pavers and stainless-steel dustbins. Officials said substantial progress had already been achieved, including the laying of drainage pipelines, construction of silt chambers and installation of utility connection chambers.

Chahal noted that the presence of a dense network of underground electrical cables and utility services beneath the six-metre-wide lane posed a challenge to the project's execution. He said NDMC was coordinating with relevant departments to explore solutions such as temporary overhead power arrangements and relocation of feeder pillars to accelerate the work.

During the inspection, Chahal also visited Lok Nayak Bhawan and directed departments to undertake repair and maintenance works. He later inspected the Enforcement Department store at Safdarjung Airport, where a recent fire incident was reported, and instructed officials to strengthen safety measures and dispose of stored materials through timely auction processes.
