Cooch Behar, Aug. 30 -- An objectionable video allegedly involving the Maharaj of a private Ashram in Sitai, Cooch Behar, has triggered tension in the area after being circulated on social media. The incident sparked protests among local residents on Sunday morning, with a section of them blocking the road near the ashram.

On receiving information, personnel from Sitai Police Station reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Police also detained Ashram Maharaj Gyananand following a complaint and took him to the police station for questioning. Police sources said he is currently being questioned in connection with the incident.

According to local sources, the Ashram was established in Saltibari around eight to 10 years ago. It provides accommodation and educational facilities for financially disadvantaged children from the area.

Locals alleged that an objectionable video involving the Maharaj was recently circulated on social media. After it came to light, anger spread among sections of residents, leading to Sunday's protest.

However, the authenticity of the viral video and the circumstances in which it was recorded and circulated have not yet been established. Police are investigating the matter to ascertain the facts.

Meanwhile, Kaushik Barman of the Rajbangshi Unnayan Manch alleged that similar allegations had been made against the Maharaj in the past. "The matter should be investigated seriously and strict action should be taken if the allegations are proved," he said. Tension continues to prevail in the area, while Sitai police are investigating the incident.
