Kolkata, July 8 -- Bengal Commerce and Industry Minister Tapas Roy on Wednesday said global conglomerate Mitsubishi has expressed strong interest in making significant investments in West Bengal, particularly in the semiconductor sector.

Describing it as part of the BJP government's efforts to revive the state's industrial sector and restore Bengal's past industrial prominence, Roy was speaking at a special session titled 'How to Unleash Growth Potential of Bengal's Economy', organised by the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce & Industry at a five-star hotel in Kolkata.

"We had a meeting with the officials of Mitsubishi in Nabanna, where they have expressed interest in investing in Bengal. We have told them that they can launch a new semiconductor unit either in Durgapur or in Panagarh. State Finance minister Swapan Dasgupta was also in the meeting," Roy said.

Roy said Mitsubishi is keen to invest in the semiconductor sector. "In the latter half of this month, representatives from Mitsubishi will visit the state. Our team will accompany them to inspect the land earmarked for the proposed project. Semiconductor units do not require large land parcels, and we will offer them sites in Durgapur or Panagarh," he said.

The minister also pointed out that the state government is soon going to unveil an industrial policy, which will have a specific land policy keeping utmost priority on ease of doing business, expanding employment generation and revenue mobilisation, which are the key factors for the state's industrial growth.

"West Bengal is entering into a new phase of industrial growth driven by investments, innovations, and infrastructural revamps. State government is also working on issues like incentive policy and restructuring of power tariffs for the industries," the minister said.

"Our state is in a strategic location. We will also try to fulfil the demands of a deep-sea port in the state. We will also come up with a single window system for the startups," he added.
