Malda, Oct. 1 -- State Minister for Food Processing Industries and Horticulture and Agriculture Amiya Kisku on Thursday reviewed various agriculture, horticulture and food-processing initiatives in Malda, with a focus on Gobindobhog paddy, mango, silk and makhana.

As part of his visit, Kisku inspected paddy fields in Char Lakshmipur village under Muchia Gram Panchayat in Old Malda and interacted with farmers to understand the progress of Gobindobhog cultivation, production levels and the challenges faced by growers. Agriculture officials, including Deputy Director Bidyut Barman and Old Malda Assistant Director Rupam Barua, accompanied the minister.

Later, Kisku chaired a high-level review meeting at the Malda Conference Hall attended by District Magistrate and senior administrative and departmental officials. The district administration presented a five-month action plan aimed at improving the next harvesting season through stronger farmer support, expansion of horticulture, value addition, cold-chain facilities and market linkages.

Kisku appreciated Malda's 'Amar Malda' initiative for promoting the production, marketing and export of mangoes and efforts to brand the fruit nationally and internationally. "Malda has immense potential in mango, silk, makhana and other signature products. These initiatives can increase farmers' income and create new livelihood opportunities," Kisku said.
