Kolkata, Aug. 5 -- An unannounced inspection by State Health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday exposed glaring lapses in cleanliness, prompting him to express strong dissatisfaction with the condition of several wards.
The minister said he was disappointed by the sanitation standards during his visit and directed the hospital authorities to take immediate corrective measures to improve cleanliness and maintenance.
He also pointed out that no stringent steps are being taken as of now, but if things do not improve and hospital campuses continue to remain unclean, steps would be taken against non-medical superintendents who are supposed to take care of the issue. He also visited the Eden Block to review mother and newborn care facilities. He supervised the maternal and neonatal care units, infrastructure, and services. This was a part of a broader series of surprise hospital checks across state-run medical facilities in the state.
"I have also spoken to the principal and medical superintendent of the Calcutta Medical College. They have placed certain demands for the hospital, and I have assured that their demands would soon be fulfilled," Mukherjee said.
Earlier, Mukherjee had also carried out a surprise inspection at RG Kar Hospital, where he voiced strong dissatisfaction over poor cleanliness, inadequate management and the alleged presence of broker syndicates.
During the visit, he inspected the emergency department as well as the children's and women's wards, interacting with on-duty staff and the families of patients to assess the situation firsthand.
The Health minister a couple of days ago made a late-night surprise visit to Tamralipta Government Medical College and Hospital in Tamluk, East Midnapore, inspecting the emergency ward and checking infrastructure, services, and administrative gaps alongside top hospital officials.
