Kolkata, Sept. 8 -- The state Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) arrested a state government employee and a middleman on Tuesday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to arrange a job on compassionate grounds, triggering tension at Bikash Bhavan.
The arrested employee is an Upper Division Assistant (UDA) in the Mass Education Extension and Library Services department, while the other accused is a local agent who allegedly assisted him.
The case began when a young man applied for a compassionate appointment after his father died while working in the department.
The UDA allegedly demanded a large sum to clear the paperwork and threatened that the youth would lose the opportunity if he failed to pay. Acting on a complaint, ACB officials laid a trap at Bikash Bhavan. The youth arrived with marked currency notes, which the middleman allegedly collected on behalf of the UDA.
Officers immediately arrested the agent. A chemical hand-wash test turned pink, indicating that he had handled the cash.
The UDA was later arrested based on the middleman's statement.
