New Delhi, Sept. 22 -- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will pilot the Indore waste management model in the West Zone, with the South and Central zones to follow, as part of efforts to improve source segregation, waste collection and field-level accountability.
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar reviewed the proposed pilot at a meeting where officials discussed adapting key practices from Indore to Delhi. The South and Central zones have also been identified for the initiative as new concessionaires have taken over waste collection and transportation in these areas. The meeting also focused on measures to curb air pollution. Khirwar directed officials to strengthen the deployment of mechanical road sweepers, water sprinklers and anti-smog guns at identified locations. He also called for expediting road maintenance, including pothole repairs, paving and greening works.
The Commissioner directed officials to maintain strict vigil against open and biomass burning, particularly at vulnerable locations. Surveillance teams comprising MCD officials will be constituted to monitor such areas and ensure timely action against incidents of biomass burning.
The civic body will also organise a series of activities across Delhi on October 2 to observe Swachh Bharat Diwas in remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi. Zonal Deputy Commissioners have been directed to organise cleanliness and awareness programmes at public places and old age homes, besides holding special council meetings with
public participation.
The October 2 programme will also include plantation of trees, planters and shrubs at cleaned garbage-vulnerable points (GVPs) and community toilet units under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative. Officials will also undertake advocacy on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, promote four-way waste segregation and administer the Swachhata Pledge. The Commissioner stressed sustained coordination among MCD officials, waste management concessionaires and citizens, directing officials to ensure ground-level implementation and regularly monitor progress.
