New Delhi, Oct. 20 -- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has sealed three unauthorised dhobi ghats in the Old Delhi zone as part of a crackdown on establishments allegedly violating environmental norms to prevent pollution of the Yamuna.

The action follows a review meeting chaired by MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, who directed officials to shut down unauthorised dhobi ghats and ensure compliance with environmental standards at authorised facilities.

Inspection reports flagged deficiencies in the functioning of effluent treatment plants (ETPs), obtaining consent to operate from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the use of soaps and detergents conforming to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms.

The civic body said action against other non-compliant establishments would be taken over the next few days in coordination with the police and the administration. Show-cause and compliance notices have been issued to defaulting operators, warning of statutory action, including sealing, in case of violations.

The process of disconnecting electricity and water connections to establishments violating the prescribed norms has also begun, with the BSES and Delhi Jal Board informed accordingly.

Khirwar directed officials to strengthen enforcement and conduct regular monitoring to prevent untreated wastewater from entering drains and water bodies.

The MCD has urged dhobi ghat operators to comply with DPCC regulations and asked residents to report unauthorised facilities to the concerned zonal office.
