New Delhi, May 21 -- Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi on Thursday dismissed allegations by the Opposition that Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) primary schools were being shut down to make way for Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, calling the claims "completely baseless" and politically motivated.

Addressing a press briefing, the Mayor said all 1,514 MCD primary schools that were operational when the BJP assumed power in Delhi and later regained control of the civic body continue to function without closure. According to him, nearly 6.5 lakh students are currently enrolled in these schools.

Wahi said the BJP-led civic administration is focusing on improving the quality of municipal education and aims to transform all MCD schools into institutions comparable to English-medium private schools by 2032. He added that the corporation is also working towards establishing "Nigam Shri Vidyalayas" modelled on the Delhi government's specialised schools.

The Mayor stated that the civic administration, under the leadership of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is committed to strengthening infrastructure and educational facilities in municipal schools to provide students with improved learning opportunities.

Rejecting allegations made by Leader of Opposition Ankush Narang, Wahi asserted that no MCD school has been shut and claimed that student enrolment in municipal schools has, in fact, increased.
