India, July 13 -- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has awarded contracts to process nearly 5,900 metric tonnes of fresh municipal waste daily at five locations, including landfill sites at Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur, officials said on Monday. According to the officials, under the contracts, Bhalswa will process 1,800 metric tonnes of fresh waste daily, Okhla 1,400 metric tonnes, Narela-Bawana 1,200 metric tonnes, Ghazipur 800 metric tonnes and Singhola 700 metric tonnes. To prevent the accumulation of new garbage at landfill sites while legacy waste remediation continues, the officials said the contracts have been awarded to different firms, which will now set up the required facilities and begin processing of fresh waste once the infrastructure is in place. The civic body has been working to clear legacy waste at the Ghazipur, Bhalswa and Okhla landfill sites. The earlier deadline of July 2026 to clear Okhla and Bhalswa has already been shifted to December 2026, and Ghazipur is scheduled for December 2027.
