India, May 20 -- Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi on Tuesday flagged off eight truck-mounted Mechanical Road Sweeping (MRS) machines from the headquarters of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi at the Dr. S.P.M. Civic Centre, as part of efforts to strengthen mechanised sanitation and curb dust pollution in the Capital. Deputy Mayor Monika Pant, Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, Leader of the House Jai Bhagwan Yadav, IVP leader Mukesh Goyal and MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar were among those present during the flagging-off ceremony. Wahi said the civic body was expanding and modernising Delhi's sanitation infrastructure under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). He added that the newly inducted machines would primarily be deployed on roads with a right of way of 60 feet or more to improve the frequency and coverage of mechanised sweeping operations. He also said the mechanised system would minimise the dependence on manual sweeping on high-speed roads and central verges, thereby improving the safety of sanitation workers exposed to traffic risks. The Corporation stated that the machines would operate under a comprehensive operation and maintenance model to ensure regular upkeep and efficient utilisation. Wahi said the vehicles had undergone quality inspection by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi before procurement. Each machine has been procured at a cost of 58.69 lakh and has an estimated operational life of 10 years, officials said. The Mayor reiterated the MCD's commitment to developing a technology-driven sanitation system focused on cleaner roads, improved worker safety and better environmental conditions in the city.
