Lucknow, July 10 -- Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday appealed to Dalits and other marginalised communities to seek justice through constitutional and legal means instead of resorting to protests on the streets, saying such agitations often end up serving the political interests of others rather than helping victims.
Addressing the media at the BSP state headquarters in Lucknow, Mayawati invoked the teachings of BR Ambedkar and BSP founder
Kanshi Ram, saying Ambedkar had always advised people to fight injustice within the framework of the Constitution and the law.
She said if justice is not delivered by lower courts, people should pursue legal remedies in higher courts rather than taking the law into their own hands.
Her remarks come against the backdrop of recent protests in several districts, including Meerut, Saharanpur, Prayagraj and Hardoi, over incidents involving members of the Scheduled Castes.
Mayawati alleged that several organisations and political parties were misleading oppressed communities for narrow political gains.
She claimed such groups first instigate people to launch protests, violence and road blockades, and later visit the affected areas only to shed "crocodile tears" while trying to derive political mileage from the situation.
