India, June 26 -- A massive fire broke out at the Bandhwari waste management site on Gurugram's Faridabad Road on Thursday, sending thick black smoke into the sky and triggering concerns over air pollution in nearby areas. Fire brigade teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the blaze. Eight fire tenders from Sector 29, Sohna and nearby fire stations were deployed to contain the flames. Officials said firefighting efforts were being hampered by smouldering gases trapped beneath heaps of garbage. Crews are using water jets, soil and Poclain machines to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading. Residents reported breathing difficulties and eye irritation due to the dense smoke. The landfill receives nearly 2,400 metric tonnes of mixed waste daily.
