New Delhi, July 5 -- A 48-year-old man undergoing treatment for schizophrenia allegedly surrendered at BHD Nagar Police Station after killing his 43-year-old wife with a tawa during a domestic dispute in Delhi's Najafgarh, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Sarita (43), while the accused, Dinesh Patel (48), is a resident of Gopal Nagar in Najafgarh.
According to police, Dinesh arrived at the police station during the intervening night of July 4 and 5 and informed the duty officer that he had killed his wife. Acting on his statement, a police team rushed to the couple's residence, where Sarita was found dead.
During questioning, Dinesh told investigators that he had been suffering from schizophrenia and had been undergoing treatment at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for the past two to three years.
Police, however, said they are continuing their investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the alleged murder.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the couple had married in 2005 and have two sons. Their elder son is preparing for engineering entrance examinations, while the younger is a Class 5 student.
Police said Dinesh had been employed with an IT company but had been unemployed for the past two months. Investigators also found that Sarita's relatives live in the same Gopal Nagar locality.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly said he had been distressed over his circumstances and frequently argued with his wife over minor issues. Police said another argument broke out on Saturday night, during which he allegedly struck her with a tawa in a fit of anger, causing fatal injuries.
A forensic science team and the crime team inspected the scene and collected evidence.
The accused has been detained and a case has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya
Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to murder.
Senior police officers said further investigation is under way, including examining whether the accused's medical condition had any bearing on the incident.
