Kolkata, May 16 -- The STF has arrested a man for allegedly sending a hoax threat e-mail claiming that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was facing an imminent suicide bomb attack by a woman linked to al-Qaeda.
The accused, identified as Hasnain Iqbal (27), a resident of Golam Abbas Lane in Garden Reach, was arrested on Friday night following a joint investigation by the cyber cell and the STF of Kolkata Police. Officials said evidence of the threat email was recovered from his mobile phone.
The e-mail was received by Bhowanipore PS around 10:15 am on May 14. It claimed that a woman associated with al-Qaeda was preparing explosives to carry out a suicide bomb attack on the chief minister. Given the reference to a terror outfit and a direct threat to the head of the state government, the matter was treated as highly sensitive.
The accused confessed that the e-mail was sent due to personal enmity with the woman and that he intended to implicate her, her family and her associates. Based on his statement, he was arrested.
