Kolkata, Sept. 20 -- Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) worker and Southkhand Gram Panchayat chief Bijon Bandhu Bag, a long-time party functionary from Patashpur-II block, died at a Kolkata hospital on Sunday morning after allegedly being brutally assaulted by BJP-backed miscreants, party MLA Kunal Ghosh said.
According to Ghosh, Bag was beaten and left critically injured by the roadside. He was subsequently admitted to a Kolkata hospital, where he died at around 8.30 am on Sunday.
The MAITC MLA condemned the incident and alleged that the assault was politically motivated. He claimed that the perpetrators had already been identified but were still moving freely in public, and demanded their immediate arrest and stringent punishment.
Ghosh also questioned the role of the police in the case. He claimed that the family initially faced difficulties in getting their complaint registered following the assault.
He said that after directions from party chairperson Mamata Banerjee, he, Dola Sen and other party leaders remained in regular contact with the hospital and the Phulbagan and Patashpur police stations. The party also sought to ensure that the family was not harassed and that the post-mortem was conducted promptly.
Ghosh added that the family's lawyer, Arka Nag, had sought precautionary measures during the post-mortem, including videography.
