Kolkata, May 17 -- Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Sunday criticised the BJP-led West Bengal government over recent eviction and demolition drives in Kolkata and adjoining areas, alleging that the administration was resorting to "bulldozer politics" at the cost of the poor.

In a post on X, Banerjee said ordinary citizens, including hawkers, daily wage earners, street vendors and small shopkeepers, were suffering because of what she described as the government's "political arrogance".

Referring to eviction drives around Howrah Station and unrest in Tiljala and Park Circus, the Trinamool supremo alleged that families were being stripped of shelter and livelihood without adequate consideration. "Bengal does not believe in bulldozer politics.

The land of Tagore and Netaji cannot be ruled through fear, force and demolition drives against ordinary citizens," she wrote. Banerjee alleged that the government was "more obsessed with optics than humanity" and accused it of ignoring the plight of poorer sections.

"A government that demolishes first and listens later has forgotten the very spirit of Bengal," she said, adding that real progress should be measured by how a state treats its weakest citizens. She further asserted that "bulldozers cannot become the language of governance" in Bengal, which she described as a land rooted in culture

and compassion. .
