NEW DELHI, June 9 -- AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Monday rewarded a local shopkeeper whose quick action helped save lives during the Malviya Nagar fire tragedy.
Singh visited the area and met those locals who were among the first responders to the major fire tragedy last week, which claimed the lives of 22 people and left several others injured.
"At a time when people were screaming for help and desperately trying to save themselves, some brave residents of this area displayed extraordinary courage, determination and bravery to save lives. I salute their courage," Singh said.
A local, Riyazuddin, who owns a mattress shop, put aside all concerns about his livelihood and personal losses and gave away all his mattresses to help save lives, he added.
"As a gesture of support, I am providing him with financial assistance of Rs 50,000 from my salary," Singh further said. He added that around 15 to 16 people survived by jumping onto those mattresses. The humanity and compassion shown by the people of this area is the true religion.
