Malda, May 13 -- Tension spread across Chandipur village under Rashidabad Gram Panchayat in Harishchandrapur-I block of Malda after a self-help group (SHG) leader was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon over a dispute related to loan distribution.

The incident took place around 9 pm on Monday. The injured woman, identified as Sultana Khatun, has been undergoing treatment at Harishchandrapur Rural Hospital for the past three days. A written complaint has been lodged with the police.

According to local sources, the SHG had received a loan of Rs 7.5 lakh nearly a year ago. Eight out of the ten members allegedly shared the money, while two members - Asha Bibi and Salma Khatun - were excluded. On Monday night, the two women, along with their husbands Mohammad Raisul Haque and Rabiul Haque, allegedly went to Sultana's house demanding the resolution register and a share of the loan amount.

An argument soon turned violent. "They came demanding the resolution book and attacked me with a sharp weapon when no male members were at home," alleged Sultana Khatun.

Her husband, Sajimuddin, demanded strict punishment for the accused. The accused families, however, denied the allegations of attacking her with a sharp weapon. Police have started an investigation, while the accused are reportedly absconding.
