Malda, Oct. 28 -- Malda Medical College and Hospital has taken a significant step towards expanding specialised healthcare services with the launch of outpatient departments (OPDs) for cardiology and nephrology with two specialist doctors.

The new services were formally inaugurated by Principal Partha Pratim Mukhopadhyay at the hospital's OPD building in the presence of medical superintendent-cum-vice-principal Ganesh Chandra Gayen, head of the Medicine department Bapilal Bala, and other doctors and healthcare workers on Wednesday.

Until now, the absence of dedicated cardiology and nephrology OPDs at the hospital had forced many patients suffering from heart and kidney ailments to seek treatment at other government medical colleges or turn to private healthcare facilities, often at considerable expense. The situation was particularly challenging for patients from economically-weaker backgrounds.

Speaking on the occasion, Mukhopadhyay said: "The introduction of cardiology and nephrology OPDs is an important step towards strengthening specialised healthcare services at Malda Medical College and Hospital. Our objective is to ensure that patients suffering from heart and kidney diseases can access specialist consultations closer to home, reducing their dependence on other hospitals."

Hospital authorities have announced separate schedules for the two departments to facilitate patient consultations.

The cardiology OPD will function twice a week, on Fridays and Saturdays. Patients will also be able to access echocardiography (ECHO) services on Wednesdays. The nephrology OPD, which will cater to patients with kidney-related ailments, will operate three days a week - Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

MSVP Gayen said: "These specialised OPDs will soon have dedicated wards which will be particularly beneficial for patients who previously had to travel to other medical colleges or spend substantial amounts at private hospitals."
