Malda, Sept. 30 -- Two separate courts in Malda delivered verdicts in criminal cases, sentencing two men to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment under the NDPS Act and another man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife.

In the first case, Fast Track Court-I Judge Nirnaya Tamang sentenced Joseph Tudu of Gazole to life imprisonment for murdering his wife, Arati Tudu, following a family dispute. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. In default, Tudu will have to undergo another six months in prison.

The murder took place at Gazole on June 4, 2017. According to the prosecution, Tudu was found in the same room where his wife was found dead, while the weapon allegedly used in the crime was also recovered from the room.

District Public Prosecutor Nilanjan Sarkar said: "The prosecution relied on the circumstances surrounding the murder, recovery of the weapon and other evidence placed before the court. Further, Tudu failed to give a satisfactory explanation of his wife's death which also ultimately resulted in the life sentence."

In the second case, ADJ-3 Monodeep Sengupta sentenced Safikul Sheikh and Jenarul Hoque to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each under Section 21(C) of the NDPS Act. In default of payment, each will have to undergo a further six months' imprisonment without labour.

According to the prosecution, CID officials recovered 435 grams of brown sugar from Safikul Sheikh and 295 grams from Jenarul Hoque during a raid at Sheikh's house in Kaliachak on September 9, 2023. The seized substance was subsequently tested and found to be heroin.

"The prosecution had successfully established the recovery and the nature of the seized narcotic substance before the court, leading to the conviction and sentencing of both accused,"

added Sarkar.
