Kolkata, Oct. 23 -- A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm next week, bringing rain and gusty winds to Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The system formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Friday and is likely to intensify into a depression on Saturday, followed by a deep depression on Sunday. It may develop into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday before moving towards the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha.

While South Bengal is expected to remain largely dry until Monday, light to moderate rain is likely in Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24-Parganas, East and West Midnapore and Jhargram from Tuesday. The weather is likely to deteriorate further on Wednesday, with heavy rainfall of 70-110 mm forecast at isolated places in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore and Jhargram.

Kolkata and other South Bengal districts may also experience rain and thunderstorms.

The IMD has forecast squally winds of 40-50 kmph along and off the Bengal coast from Tuesday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the state's coast from October 27.
