New Delhi, July 6 -- A 20-year-old married woman was allegedly shot dead by her husband with the help of his girlfriend in Haryana's Gurugram, weeks after the high-profile Ketan Agarwal murder case drew attention to another alleged crime involving intimate relationships.
According to the police, the accused, identified as Ankit (25) and his alleged girlfriend Rajni (38) have been arrested after remaining on the run for over a month. Police said the duo allegedly concealed the victim's body inside a bathroom before fleeing the area.
According to investigators, the incident took place on May 21 when Ankit allegedly took his wife, Madhu, to Rajni's house in Manesar.
Police alleged that the murder was premeditated and that the accused had procured the firearm nearly two months in advance with the intention of carrying out the killing. After allegedly shooting Madhu, the two hid her body in the bathroom and escaped.
The crime came to light after Madhu's mother approached the police on May 22 and lodged a missing person's complaint.
An FIR was initially registered under the relevant provisions for a missing person. As the investigation progressed and evidence emerged indicating foul play, police added murder charges and intensified the probe. During the investigation, officers found that Ankit and Rajni had allegedly been in a relationship for the past three years.
Police said Ankit operated a tobacco shop in Manesar, while Rajni worked at a beauty parlour in the same locality.
Investigators further revealed that the accused fled to Haridwar soon after the murder and later crossed into Nepal to evade arrest.
They allegedly remained absconding until June 30, when they returned to India. Acting on specific inputs, the Crime Branch team in Manesar apprehended both accused.
They were produced before a local court, which remanded them to five days of police custody for further interrogation. Police are continuing their investigation to establish the complete sequence of events and gather additional evidence in the case.
