Kolkata, Nov. 2 -- Loreto Day School, Sealdah, will introduce coeducation at senior secondary level from the 2028 academic session, allowing boys to enrol in Classes XI and XII and ending its nearly 170-year-old all-girls tradition. The decision follows a year-long assessment led by principal Sister Baishakhi Mondal, who consulted parents, teachers and non-teaching staff before the Loreto Education Board approved the proposal.
Nandini Bhattacharjee, education director at Loreto South Asia, said the move aims to extend the institution's emphasis on moral values to boys. She said the school felt boys also needed equal attention to values and character-building in the present context.
Bhattacharjee said Classes XI and XII provide an important opportunity to shape students' outlook before they enter higher education. She described starting at this stage as a deliberate challenge, saying that influencing even a few boys at that age would be a meaningful beginning.
Over the next year, the school will modify its infrastructure, including constructing separate toilets for boys, and complete administrative preparations.
The move comes amid wider changes in Loreto institutions. Loreto College, a 114-year-old women's institution, has also announced plans to introduce coeducation from the next academic session.
