Kolkata, Sept. 17 -- The CPI(M) has hit back at West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, accusing him of allegedly trying to "strong-arm" Jadavpur University students and teachers while neglecting governance, as Left parties organised a large rally through the same stretch where the Chief Minister had recently taken out a procession.
The CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) and other Left parties marched on Wednesday evening from Dhakuria to Sukanta Setu, followed by a public meeting. CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim, former Jadavpur MLA Sujan Chakraborty and other Left leaders addressed the gathering. SFI national general secretary Srijan Bhattacharyya
was also present.
The rally came days after Adhikari participated in a Rakhi celebration in Jadavpur and subsequently walked with a procession of sadhus. During the latter procession, which passed the university, he had criticised the Left.
Chakraborty accused the CM of visiting the university to "intimidate" students and teachers, alleging the government was "doing everything except work".
Salim accused the BJP-led government of failing to fill vacant posts and attacking universities and academic freedom to impose its ideology on higher education.
Several JU students also joined the procession.
